Ice fishing

Originally practised by the Amerindians, ice fishing—known here as pêche blanche—is enjoyed just about everywhere in Québec once the ice is thick enough on the rivers and lakes. To protect themselves from the wind and weather, fishing enthusiasts set up little huts on the ice. These can be surprisingly comfortable! Whether you’re a novice or an old hand, it’s a unique opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled day out with family or friends.

At the end of the line

The mostly commonly fished species are walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. In the Saguenay region, redfish, cod and black turbot are on the menu, while in the lakes dotting the Laurentian highlands, rainbow trout and brook trout are the catch of the day.

Amerindians—the Attikamek in particular—have a very clever fishing technique that consists of keeping a net beneath the icy surface of a frozen lake. Setting up these nets, which can measure 25 m or longer, involves poles, floats and weights and can easily take half a day.

This map provides a schematic illustration of fishing conditions at some of the most popular sites. This information, updated regularly from the start of the season (late December or early January), cannot be guaranteed. Conditions may vary, often in the space of a few hours, depending on meteorological and hydrographic factors.
