Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs

Wildlife reserve Region : Gaspésie City : Mont-Saint-Pierre

Described as a "land of mountains, forests and rocks" by the venerable Father Le Clerk at the end of the 17th century, the Appalachian Chic-Chocs form the backbone of the Gaspé Peninsula, one of the principal forest bastions of Québec. The Chic-Chocs Wildlife Reserve was established in 1949 to create a buffer zone around Gaspé Conservation Park, preserve exceptional wildlife habitats and promote better use of the land. Chic-Chocs Wildlife Reserve is separated into two distinct areas. The largest section (1,048 km²) is located to the south and east of Gaspé Park. Another much smaller section (81 km²) is found to the north. To the west rise the distinctive, bare summits of Blanche-Lamontagne (930 m), Vallières-de-Saint-Réal (914 m) and Hog's Back (807 m) while in the east, Mount Brown (855 m) towers over a less rugged landscape. Toward the north, the reserve is chiseled by deep-sided valleys stretching toward the municipalities of Mont-Saint-Pierre and Mont-Louis. Visit the Chic-Chocs and experience nature at its glorious best in the heart of the Gaspé Peninsula's impressive mountains. ©Société des établissements de plein air du Québec
