Cycling events you won’t want to miss
Year-long major biking events
With zest for life and warm welcome encoded in the DNA of Quebecers, it’s no wonder that their sense of festivity is reflected even in cycling! Whether the plan is to push one’s endurance limits or ride at a leisurely pace while admiring scenic urban and rural landscapes, cyclists of all stripes will find something to their taste in Québec. Along with sharing a mutual passion, cyclists create bonds and enjoy unforgettable experiences at the many bike events staged throughout the summer months. The instant the weather is good enough to haul the bikes out of storage, cyclists emerge for recreational group rides, competitions and challenges of all kinds that run straight through to the fall.
Cyclists are welcome everywhere -- in large urban centres and tiny villages alike. Indeed, all over Québec, events are held to allow cyclists to discover the treasures of the places the locals call home. Here are some of the province’s major biking events:
Montréal is thronged by cyclists during this hotly anticipated festival. Three famous events for cyclists of all ages and levels invite riders to explore the metropolis from a different perspective, by day and by night! The Metropolitain Challenge kicks off the cyclosportive season with a course of 31 miles to 93 miles (50 km to 150 km). The Tour la Nuit is a wonderfully festive night outing in which riders and machines light up the city! And in the well-known Tour de l’Île de Montréal, spirits are high as thousands of riders make their way, at their own pace, through the city streets, pedalling distances ranging from 15 miles to 62 miles (25 km to 100 km). Seasoned athletes are also well-served by the 31 miles (50 km) Express.
This world-class mountain and road biking festival is held in Mont-Tremblant, this internationally renowned vacation destination located a just over an hour from Montréal. The Gran Fondo cyclosportive and the MTB Québec/Canada Cup are marquee events of the festival, which also has an array of family-friendly activities.
During this week-long cycling event, riders develop a unique spirit of camaraderie as they discover parts of Québec. Every year, the route takes participants through the outstanding landscapes of a different region, and the camping accommodations and luggage transport service make it one of the most popular gatherings for experienced cyclists.
Québec City and area as well as Montréal host these two events, which attract the world’s elite cyclists. This high-level happening promises to be spectacular and to impress the crowds of festive spectators.
The world’s best mountain bike riders are expected at Mont Sainte-Anne to compete in downhill and cross-country races. The action-packed festival also includes amateur competitions and family activities.
Cross a lake in the middle of winter! Fatbike enthusiasts are invited to cross Lac Saint-Jean on the 19.88 miles (32 km) linear path made of snow and ice. A unique challenge for racers and other adventurous souls!
